Researchers checked both the physical and psychological response to stress. For this purpose, morning blood samples were taken to check the level of cortisol at the start day and at the end of the experiment, which determines the physical response. The mental reaction was in turn controlled by appropriate questionnaires determining the level of perceived stress, quality of life and depressive symptoms, completed on start and end days and additionally during a telephone conversation on days 15, 30 and 45.

The results of the study are promising. The questionnaire determining the level of perceptible stress (PSS) indicates its reduction by as much as 44% in the study group, compared to 5.5% in the placebo group! Even better results were noted in the general health questionnaire (GHQ-28), where the decline in somatic symptoms, anxiety and sleeplessness, social dysfunctions and depressive symptoms was about 70% in those using Ashwagandha and about 10% in the control group. Very similar results were also found in the DASS test defining depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms. The difference was also found in cortisol levels, with a decrease of 27.9% in the study group and only 7.9% in the placebo group.

As you can see, a surprisingly high improvement was noted in every assumed parameter, and the study participants receiving the Ashwagandha extract gained a much higher quality of life. It’s worth considering adding this natural remedy to supplement when chronic stress affects us.
