Vitamin D and Omega-3 fatty acids regulate serotonin level.

Serotonin regulates many brain func tions and behaviors. Such disorders as attention deficit, hyperactivity, bipolar disease, schizophrenia or impulsive behaviors are connected to the improper serotonin level.

Vitamin D and Omega-3 fatty acids supplementation demonstrates a beneficial effects in all the above mentioned disorders.

In the two-part study, the researchers from California checked the role of Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D in the serotonin synthesis and drew the following collusions:

  • EPA supports serotonin release from neurons by lowering the number of inflammatory compounds connected to prostaglandins E2 (inflammation block serotonin release).
  • DHA increases the liquidity of cell membranes in the brain, allowing serotonin to reach receptors easier.
  • Vitamin D – regulates tryptophan conversion to serotonin.

The combination of Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D protects from the consequences related to non-optimal serotonin levels.

Vitamin D and Omega-3 fatty acids supplementation may support prevention of brain dysfunctions related to non-optimal serotonin levels, as well as contribute to the modulation of existing dysfunctions.
